Wintry Lips! 2015

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

Winter is alive and well here in the Midwest. It is completely covered in snow where I live. It's times like these that make me wish I had kept all of my Adidas swishy pants from the 90's so I could go out there and make some snow angels! That would be just perfect right now. All wishing aside, it is beautiful out there, albeit a bit frigid.. And if you couldn't tell by the picture above, this weather has really got me in the mood to talk about the lip products that I love to use in the winter.

My picks are from left to right: Revlon Super Lustrous in Black Cherry*, YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in Pourpre Intouchable, Too Faced La Creme Lipstick in Spice Spice Baby, Revlon Matte in Really Red*, Essence in Wear Berries, Wet N Wild in Bare It All

So let's get to swatching. If you look below, you'll see that there's some wines, a festive red, some muted nudes, and a bright orchid lipstick (for the days I'm feeling that spring can't get here fast enough).

Winter Lipstick Swatches
L to R - Revlon Super Lustrous in Black Cherry*, YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in Pourpre Intouchable, Too Faced La Creme Lipstick in Spice Spice Baby, Revlon Matte in Really Red*, Essence in Wear Berries, Wet N Wild in Bare It All

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry
The first shade is a deep wine color that has a light sheen when applied on the lips. It's got buildable coverage and can be worn as a lighter stain as well. It's a glorious, vampy shade that can add drama to any FOTD. The staying power is formidable and will last you a good couple of hours. I will say that, sometimes the application can be a bit patchy, and I'm considering replacing this shade with Rimmel #11 next year, when I run out. I can't say that it's so bad that I would cease to wear it altogether. That's just too wasteful to me.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick in Pourpre Intouchable (Shade 02)
This next one is a glossy plum shade. The Rouge Volupte Shines are sheer washes of color that really moisturize and plump your lips. Before the Nars Audacious Lipstick launch at the end of 2014, this was my favorite lipstick formula. It applies so smoothly. The swatch below is one swipe of the lipstick. You can see that though it is a sheer formula, it does impart a good deal of color. When it is applied a few more times, you can build it to a more vibrant reddish purple berry color.

Too Faced La Creme Lipstick in Spice Spice Baby
This is a classic pinky nude color that goes on completely opaque in one swipe. It's super creamy in texture. Also, though a vampy lip may be really fun to wear in the winter, most of us can't really wear it on a daily basis. This shade is a great one to swap in for those instances, like a day at the office or a wedding. It's perfect for any occasion. I also have to mention that it smells divine like a lemon bar.

Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in Really Red
This is a no-budge no-nonsense tomato red that is truly matte. It lasts like a motherf*cker and is so completely classic and beautiful. It is sometimes touted as a dupe for MAC's Ruby Woo though I can't really confirm it myself at the moment. Sorry for the uneven application in the swatch.

Essence Wear Berries
This shade just makes me weep for spring. It's the one I use when I'm feeling like Debbie Downer. It's a cool tone pink with some purple in there. I can only imagine it's the color grape-flavored cotton candy might take on. It's a cream finish that toes the line between sheer and opaque.

Essence Wear Berries Swatch

Wet n Wild Lipstick in Bare It All (902C)

It's just a light skin colored nude. I actually almost never wear it the way I've swatched it below because it is drying on the lips and will show any dry patches, cracks, or lines on the lips. However, what it is perfect for is to use as a base for a nice ombre or gradation lip. Pair it with a plum, pink, or even orange. Whatever floats your boat.
