Have you guys ever watched this viral video of a Taiwanese game show where girls completely transform their faces with makeup? It's gotten over 1 million views on Youtube and it is pretty shocking to see what they can do with just a few tools that are readily available to everyone.
I usually never stray far from a natural look because I don't want to look unrecognizable to people who know me, but I had some time on my hands and so I decided to attempt a more drastic transformation. The ultimate goal I had in mind was to make my eyes look bigger without the use of eyelid tape. Why without eyelid tape? First off, I don't own any. Second, I watched a Youtube tutorial on how to use it, and it seemed like removing it hurt like a motherf*cker so eep, just no. Lastly, I wanted to test the limits of using only makeup to change my look.
So, to begin. My eyes are pretty small and shaped like tadpoles, not almonds. Also, I have a small double eyelid that remains visible at all times... aka the eyelid fold, also called a "ssangapuhl" in Korean. I wanted to elongate my eyes, widen them, fake a deeper crease, and make them look more almond-like.
Pictured below is my eye sans makeup. This is what I'm working with.
The next photo is the look I achieved using the following steps. I seriously feel like I look like a different person.
PREP
1) Moisturize your face and let it absorb for a few minutes.
EYES
*Most of the eyeshadows used are from the Sephora Collection Nude Palette*
1) Shape and shade your brows with an ashy brown eyebrow gel. Extend the tail a little bit further than you normally do to elongate the eye.
2) Apply a matte white or almond shade all over the lid up to the brow bone to act as a base. This will make the colors show up better.
3) Apply a shimmery champagne eyeshadow to the inner half of the eyelid to attract the light and make your eyes look brighter.
4) Take some time to decide where you want to fake your crease. I chose a spot about 2 mm above my natural crease. Then, take a shimmery light brown or copper shade onto a small, flat brush and apply it to the area where you want to fake the crease. Blend it well but not too well. Make sure that the area is dark enough to look as though it is further away from the viewer.
5) Take a darker shimmery brown shadow and apply it to the outer half of the natural eyelid. Extend this out a little further than the length of your eye since we want to elongate the eye.
6) Take the same dark brown shimmer onto an eyeliner brush and apply underneath the eye, on the outer third. This will make sure the eyes look balanced and not top heavy with shadow. Also extend out a little further than the outer end of your eye.
7) Take a gel eyeliner and apply a thin line, winging it out at the outer end of the eye. Extend it further than the outer end of your eye. Again, this makes your eyes look longer.
8) In order to fake the almond shape, take your eyeliner and extend it into the inner corner of your eye, creating a small triangle shape at the inner corner.
9) Apply a set of half lashes to the eyes at the outer edge. Make sure to curl your natural lashes and coat with mascara to blend them with the falsies.
10) Apply the shimmery champagne eyeshadow on the inner 2/3 of the lower lash line. This will make your eyes look wider and brighter.
*PHEW <wipes sweat off brows> 10 whole steps for just the eyes!*
FACE
1) Take a yellow or peach/salmon corrector and apply it to your under eye circles if you have them. If you don't, you are hashtag blessed.
2) Cover the color-corrected area with concealer.
3) Take a little bit of BB cream or medium coverage foundation and apply it to your trouble areas. If you have a shade that is a tad lighter than your skin tone, apply a little bit of that to your forehead, down your nose, on your cupid's bow, and your chin. By doing this, your face will look smaller since the remaining areas remain darker. It's an easy contour to do.
4) Apply a baby pink or lavender blush to the tops of your cheekbones. This bit of color will draw the eye towards the eyes as well. In this photo, I use Etude House Cookie Blusher in Blueberry Pie.
5) Optional: brush a little bit of highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones.
LIPS
1) Slick on a sheer or glass pink lipstick. In this photo, I use YSL Rouge Volupte Sheer in Pink in Paris.
Voila, now you've reached new heights of makeup wizardry! Now practice, practice, practice and have fun with it! Take liberties with the look and use different, fun color combinations. In the below pic, I did essentially the same look with a cooler toned eyeshadow quad, a nude blush, and a plummy lip.
