Mizon Snail Wrinkle Care Sleeping Pack Review

Saturday, April 18, 2015

I've found that the world of Korean skincare is vast and often hard to navigate, with new miracle ingredients coming out all of the time. There's snail mucin, starfish, collagen of both the flora and fauna varieties, ferments, kelp... It's a regular cornucopia of interesting stuff to slather on your face. Because I've a renewed interest in skincare of late, I feel compelled to try products in each of these categories to see for myself whether or not they really make a difference.

On the menu for today is snail mucin.

Snail mucin, which often makes the ingredients list as "snail secretion filtrate", is the slippery slime trail left by snails when going to and fro in your garden. It's rich in allantoin, useful for repairing and healing skin. It also has glycolic acid, an AHA for brightening. And lastly, not to be ignored are the glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, elastin, hyaluronic acid, and collagen, useful for moisturizing and volumizing purposes. (I perk up whenever I hear the words hyaluronic acid and collagen, here's why). This cocktail of ingredients was really appealing to a dry skin lady like myself.

I succumbed to the siren song of the snail by picking up the Mizon Snail Wrinkle Care Sleeping Pack on eBay-roseroseshop for $16. It's also available at US-based Urban Outfitters for $26.

All I have to say is that if you have dry skin with signs of aging, you're going to want this. It may not be suitable for those with oily skin, or those with skin easily irritated by plant extracts and citrus oils. As an added bonus, it's formulated without parabens and mineral oil.

It's a medium-weight cream that you wear overnight as a mask. You wash it off in the morning as you proceed with your usual daytime routine. It comes with a fair amount of product, I don't expect to run out for about 4-6 months. Packaging-wise, it comes in a tub with a small spatula. Very sanitary...  It smells a bit herbal and citrus-y due to the oils and extracts included in the formula. A word of caution, if your skin is easily irritated, you may want to avoid this one and spring for something with zero fragrant oils like the Mizon All-In-One Snail Cream, $18.03 at Wishtrend.

My very first impression was that it was weighty, and bouncy and had a lot of slip in the formula. It kind of felt like a creamy water droplet with a smidge of slimeyness. (snails, what can you do). When I patch tested it, it just glided across the skin, leaving it feeling super smooth and moisturized. When I first applied it on my face, I noticed that it absorbed within 30 seconds. For a little while, I was alarmed because I felt a bit of tightness on my face, and I wondered omg could this elite squad of ingredients actually be drying my skin out? What fresh hell is this! But, rest assured friends that this is all part of its act. The cream unleashes that tightening action to reduce your fine lines and wrinkles and it is not in fact drying your face out. After a few weeks of use, I can honestly say that my skin is softer and more moisturized than ever, and my skin tone looks more even too. It literally looks like it got resurfaced. By a Zamboni. Driven by a little snail.

Snails. They're grr-eat!

I leave you with some visuals.

Snails are slow. Slow is good. At least when it comes to aging.

Anyways, I think it's been working. My dry skin has finally stopped flaking and it looks and feels at its best since I started using this. The word of the day since this has come into my life is 촉촉. "Chok-chok", Korean for moist.
