Part II: Asian Beauty Ingredients 101

Sunday, May 10, 2015

Lately, I've been finding myself really enjoying sifting through skincare blogs and research on the weekends. I think I may turn this into something like Throwback Thursday or Tutorial Tuesday... Maybe Skincare Sunday. This can be a thing. Let's roll with it.

Welcome to Skincare Sunday.

Today's topic of the day is the plethora of Asian beauty ingredients out there. Asian skincare is pretty hot right now, I think it's safe to say.. which is wonderful. Why you ask? Well, it's a great option for people who want to buy great products while cashing in on good value. Generally speaking, Asian skincare lines have been able to incorporate top-of-the-line ingredients at a low cost without sacrificing quality. I have to attest that in the short time I started paying attention to my skin and incorporating some of these Asian skincare products, I've seen my skin progress from something I could only describe as a blotchy, red replica of the Sahara desert into skin that I can be proud of. It's more even in tone and almost unrecognizable to me by touch whenever I "accidentally" graze my face with my hand. Ok I'm lying. I'm touching my face non-stop lately because I still can't believe the vast improvement I've seen.

Where were we? Oh yes, the most common headlines surrounding Asian beauty in the media are ones that have shock value. Such-and-Such-Ingredient is THE New Must-Have per Korean-Actress-with-Perfect-Skin.  And to those out of the know, the ingredients are surprising and sometimes have the ability to induce some cringe. There's ass (donkey) milk, snail goo, bird spit, just to name a few. While these may be unconventional, when we take a deeper look into the composition of each of these ingredients, you'll see why they are being incorporated into skincare. The building blocks of each of these star ingredients has the power to induce real change in the skin.

So I gave Asian Beauty the infographic treatment, both for my sake, and for any of you who are interested in trying it out.

The guide below will detail:
  • the composition of each of these star ingredients at a deeper level - If you view it side-by-side with the cheat sheet from last week, you'll be able to really understand the benefits of each one. Download it here
  • the benefits of each type of ingredient at a high-level
  • some of the ingredients on the list may cause you to ask how the ingredient is sourced and whether any animals are harmed in the process, and so I've included some details on that
You can save a version by double-clicking on the photo.

Side note: I omitted some other ingredients that you may encounter like placenta and stem cells on the grounds that I could not find research to substantiate the claims made. I also left out aloe vera, ginseng, different types of tea, crushed pearl, and a few others that are already easy to find in western skincare.

I'll end with a really cliche (and possibly trite) quote that kind of applies here..
The world is a book and those who do not travel (in this case, slather snail mucin on your face) read only one page.

If you're new to this, I've included some suggestions below (affiliate links).

One of the easiest entry points I found, for myself at least, was to try different ingredients through single-serving sheet masks. The rest are products I have tried and loved as someone with dry skin focussed on anti-aging. If you happen to try any of them out, please be careful of any allergies or sensitivities you may have. And let me know how you like it! I'd love to hear from you.
Have you tried any of these ingredients? What was your experience with it?

-Joan

P.S. let me know if you think I've left something out!
