KOREAN MAKEUP OVERVIEW

If you made the hop over to this installment of the series, I assume you may be as into makeup as I am :) So read on to learn more about how Korean makeup compares to Western makeup.

Cuz face it, makeup is awesome!

Korean makeup slightly lags the skincare market in terms of desirability to Westerners because of stylistic differences between Korean and Western makeup. In general, (this is just my own observation) Westerners seem to prize high coverage foundations with HD photo ready finishes, and highly pigmented color cosmetics to make for more dramatic looks. Korean women like natural foundations with less coverage, and prefer their color cosmetics to be more buildable. I'm just speculating, but since practicing good skincare takes work, perhaps they want to flaunt the results they are seeing? Kind of a case of, if you've got it, flaunt it? Maybe, maybe not. I will just put the thought out there. I digress. Let's take a deeper look at Korean makeup trends and products.

KOREAN MAKEUP TRENDS

I touched briefly upon the stylistic differences between Korean and Western makeup where I mentioned that Korean women favor natural coverage base products and buildable (read: more lightly pigmented) color cosmetics.

There are a few trending styles of makeup worn by Korean women, but they both emphasize a youthful approach to applying makeup.  On a recent trip to Korea, I observed that a lot of young women (college-age) seemed to be sporting pastel or neutral shades on the eyes and cheeks, accentuated with a bit shimmer or glitter, alongside bright lips. The second and more universal style of look was eyeliner, a bright, dewy base, with a pop of color on the lips. The looks were not very dramatic, and no one was walking the streets with a dark, smoky eye or contour up the wazoo. The below photo is an example of a the first style of makeup look done by Youtube makeup artist Pony.

In terms of new emerging trends, it seems that a more bronze-y glow and natural lip may come en vogue this year similar to a look featured by celebrity makeup artist Jungsaemmool on her Youtube channel.

KOREAN MAKEUP PRODUCTS

Here is a quick overview of the different types of makeup available by beauty brands. They're always innovating so this list could be outdated in a matter of months.

They always have awesome packaging doe. Glaring omissions: concealers and brow products. They aren't that different from what we have here in the U.S.

We talked about how skincare is of utmost importance in Korea right? WELL, another trend in Korean makeup is the concept of "built-in skincare", which means skin-conditioning ingredients are added into the formulas of makeup products. I said it once and I'll say it again, Kbeauty is a beauty philosophy that begins and ends with the skin.

Hope this was helpful and please let me know if you have anything to add!
