I've Got the Magic Pole - Holika Holika Magic Pole Mascara 2X 02 Long & Curl Review

This isn't a rave, there will be no glow sticks in this review. Only magic poles. :p

Being a contact lens wearer, I was on the hunt for a contact 'lens-safe' mascara because apparently that's a thing. 'Lens-safe' mascaras are non-waterproof and can't have fibers. The Holika Holika Magic Pole Mascara 2X in 02 Long and Curl fit the bill so I picked it up to see if it could work for my stick-straight Asian lashes.

The Holika Holika had a tough act to follow with my last mascara having been the stellar Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Edge Meister Mascara, which I'll refer to as the MM Long Name Mascara from this point on.

My requirements for a mascara are:
  • no smudging or flaking
  • lengthens some, volumizes some
  • easy to remove
  • has a drier formula
  • lasts a workday
  • and HOLDS A CURL (or you won't be able to see it above my ever-present eyeliner flick)

apparently Enprani is Holika Holika's momma, good to know.

Packaging
The Holika Holika comes in a shiny, purple and silver cylindrical tube. The cap is easy to grip as it's molded into a 10 sided cylinder. What would I call that - a decagonal cylinder? It basically looks like a magic wand that would look quite natural and at-home tucked into Luna Lovegood's fannypack. It's of a pretty standard size.

The Wand

The wand is a plastic one with very thinly and evenly spaced out (plastic) bristles. At the very tippy top, there's a spherical cluster of plastic bristles. Just on first glance, the want looks like it would give very good length and separation. The sphere on the end I feel is just a gimmick, I don't really use it that often.

The Formula
The formula is a dry one so I was happy about that. Wet mascaras tend to smudge on me before they dry down. This one is actually really nice because although the formula is really dry, it doesn't make your lashes feel crispy at all. The finish is glossy and black.

The Results
I normally like to show the mascara with 1 coat, and then 2 coats applied, but I found that 2 coats made the mascara look clumpy, and not in an intentional way.

It may be called the 'Long and Curl' but it should really be called the 'Long and Wilt'. As you can see in the photo above, it gives great length, but didn't really hold the curl all that well. Not only did it wilt after just a few hours, the fact that the lashes dropped down to the lash line made my lashes look really spare.

It does wash off rather easily though, which I like. It can also last the day without any smudging or flaking which is pretty impressive.

But just a reminder what it was up against... The MM Long Name Mascara makes my lashes reach for the sky...
