Great skincare doesn't grow on trees, at least not all the time anyway!
This time it does as I have a camellia-based skincare product to share with you. And it's one I've enjoyed through winter and spring. Spoiler alert - I'm in deep like with it so I hope this post is coherent and I'm not too overly blubbery about it.
I've given a short review on the product on my Instagram a few months ago. How I didn't realize I'd still be using and enjoying it today after all this time. In the winter, I used it as a part of my nighttime skincare routine as a booster or in place of a serum/ampoule. It really made a difference in the moisture levels in my skin. In the spring, I've been using it more in the daytime and wanted to give an update on its performance during the rising temps and as an A.M. moisturizer.
The Brand

Goodal is a mass-market naturalist brand that features fermented ingredients. They are a part of the Club Clio house of brands (Goodal, Club Clio, Peripera) and are the only skincare brand among the three. Goodal's values can be surmised from their own words; they care about creating products that penetrate deeply into the skin to give lasting effects: moisture, stress-relief, and anti-aging benefits.
The Korean Skincare Trend
Oil be darned if I haven't enjoyed this recent K-beauty trend- there's a new class of products called essence oils, or serum oils which are liquid skincare products that contain various types of oils in them. The consistencies of the products can be different from one another, there's no standard definition of how much of each type of ingredient needs to be in the products. In fact, you can make your own bootleg with whatever you have at home. Goodal calls their version a 'water oil'.
Product
The Goodal Water Oil Firming Camellia is one of three types of "water oils" that they carry. They have a Waterest Water Oil, a Camellia, and a Lotus. Texture-wise, the camellia water oil has a lovely plush gel consistency with an oily finish, something Club Clio calls a "bubble oil" texture. It's clear and has a scent that is not too strong, a floral which is most probably a camellia scent. I'd assume that the camellia and lotus have similar textures as well.

Packaging
I really enjoy it when the quality of the product is also reflected in the design of the packaging. In this case, I think that it's a match. The water oil comes in a muted pink-toned, plastic bottle. It's sturdy and spill-proof. There's an ivory-beige colored pump with a plastic cap. Just a little warning - I've recently read that products with pump packaging can sometimes get clogged up with bacteria.
The name of the product and other details are embossed on the bottle. Details like Goodal's claims, which are whitening and wrinkle care, also elasticity and firming. There are 60 mls of product and the expiration date is written on the bottom of the bottle.

Ingredients Analysis
I picked up the Water Oil Firming Camellia because of the saccharomyces ferment filtrate (red yeast rice ferment) and niacinamide being so high up on the ingredients list. Both of these ingredients have worked to brighten the skin before. Adenosine is great for wrinkle care and camellia japonica seed oil is one of the star ingredients which works to moisturize the skin. The fact that the product contains ferments makes it more likely to be effective at penetrating into the skin and delivering their purported benefits. The camellia flower extract is supposed to be micro-fermented, so the particles are even smaller. It also has hydrating ingredients that I always look for in a product, like glycerin and the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid, Sodium Hyaluronate.
To Use
After using a first toner [or essence], dispense enough product for the entire face and lightly pat in using circular motions to allow the product to absorb into the skin.
Who It's For
Best for those with normal to dry skin, for anyone who is not allergic to any of the ingredients listed above, and for those who are not sensitive to fragrance.
Performance
I used this as a daytime moisturizer and have noticed that it's light enough to work well under sunscreen and makeup. I've also noticed that although it's got quite an oily texture it doesn't actually obstruct chemical sunscreens from doing their thing and protecting your skin. When I use 1 to 2 pumps, it's enough to last the entire day without causing any dry flakes in the crazy Chicago spring weather which can often change from cold and snowy to 80 degrees and sunny in the span of a week or so.
In terms of wrinkle care, anything that hydrates is helpful for the skin. Also, in terms of whitening, which really just means brightening dull skin, I didn't notice much of an effect. The product leaves skin luminous and just makes it look quite healthy and nourished.
This is one that I really like. I could see how it might be a little too oily for those with overactive sebaceous glands, but for those with similar skin concerns like me (dry skin/aging), definitely check it out if interested. Please just 'dong holla baek' at me if it doesn't work out for you.
