Hit and Miss: Heroine Make Long & Curl Super Waterproof Mascara and Banila Co Eye Love Cushion 3D Brow

Saturday, April 30, 2016

I have a few makeup items to review for you today. They're both eye makeup items and there's one hit and one miss. The hit item is a cult favorite with rave reviews all over the web, and the miss is well... a miss so I'll spare you the details on it. So with that said, these reviews are going to be quite quick, let's just get right into it.

Hit: Isehan Kiss Me Heroine Make Long and Curl Mascara Super Waterproof (6g)

After my tete a tete with the Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Edge Meister Mascara, I'd pretty much fallen for fiber lash mascaras (they lengthen, volumize, and most importantly are light enough in formula to hold a curled lash without the help of any fancy heated curlers etc.). However, the one that kept on showing up in my Insta feed and blogroll with rave reviews was the Heroine Make Long and Curl Mascara in many variations (Make Volume and Curl, non-waterproof, waterproof, and super waterproof). The Long and Curl Waterproof version is in pink packaging which I believe has been discontinued in favor of this newer version in a violet-black packaging which is Super Waterproof.

Aside from the different packaging, since I haven't tried the waterproof version, I can't compare the differences between the two today unfortunately.

The wand of the Heroine ML&C Super Waterproof is a curved, spiraled wand with short coarse bristles. The mascara formula is more traditional drier formula and it doesn't add fibers to the lashes. I'm assuming that the drier formula actually helps keep the product lighter or less dense on the lashes which helps to keep the lift and curl much longer than other traditional mascara formulas.

This mascara is very black, lengthens a more than decent amount although it's not the best I'd had, without splaying out the lashes in an non-uniform way, and also keeps the curl (cue hallelujah chorus). It volumizes, is very waterproof, and pretty oil-proof as well. It doesn't smudge the entire day except for a teeny bit under my left eye which unfortunately happens with almost every single product I've tried. An issue that I've solved with the Etude House Dr. Lash Mascara Fixer review here. Not the product's fault. It's also not as difficult to remove as I had expected, if you have an oil-based cleanser you'll definitely be able to remove this one without putting in too much effort.

All in all, I would definitely not mind using this again, although it didn't manage to shake my fealty to fiber lash mascaras. Next up, I'm thinking the Majolica Majorca Lash King or perhaps one of the new Missha 3D or 4D mascaras. I give this mascara a 4/5 rating.

Have you any experiences to share about this mascara or any of the ones I mentioned as its potential successor?

Miss: Banila Co Eye Love Cushion 3D Brow in 01 Gray Brown (9.5g)

The Banila Co Eye Love Cushion 3D Brow was a disappointment for me in that I was under the impression that cushions are supposed to make everything better, right? In the realm of face products like foundations and blushes that may be the case, but color me unimpressed with this format for brow products (and potentially eyeliners). Just my opinion though as YMMV even with makeup products.

I purchased it in shade 1 Gray Brown. It also comes in 2 Natural Brown and 3 Light Brown.

This is a brow wax/paste that is contained under some netting in a pot that looks a lot like something a concealer would come in. The photos below show it after some wear but the netting itself is white and on the lid there is an inner cylinder that fits directly over the cushion netting so that the product doesn't dry out. It's like a little donut pan. The product also comes with a brow brush that is pictured in the top right corner. The brush that comes with the product is the one on top, which is flat and wide. The brush on the bottom is a gel eyeliner brush. I'll get into why it's there shortly.

Alas the color of the product is quite nice and natural looking for many people with naturally brown to black hair as it's a neutral to cooler toned ashy brown. This is the main strength of the product. I'll also give it the fact that it does last throughout the day and that hasn't dried up over the many months I've had it thus far. It sure has a lot of weaknesses though.
The consistency of the product is a little too thick and pasty, which while this can be a good thing for those with a lot of stray brow hairs, for those looking to fill in sparse areas, it looks really unnatural. Next, the brush that comes with the product is about 2-3 times as wide as most brow brushes which makes it difficult to deposit just a little bit of product at a time to build up the brows using natural looking strokes. One workaround is to use a gel eyeliner brush, I used my Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner brush to get more precise strokes. Once the product sets, it's not smudge-proof, so all my hat girls beware.

That's all I've got to say about this one, For those with sparse brows I rate this a skip, and for those that are brow-rich, I might recommend to give it a go. I rate this a 2.5/5.

What are you using on your brows lately? Are you a gel, pencil, or browcara person? I have since turned back to my e.l.f. brow kit in Medium, one of the most cost-effective and actually good brow gels on the market.

That's all for today. Hope you have a great weekend!
