Tosowoong Essence Cushion SPF 50+ PA+++ #21 Light Beige Review

Saturday, July 23, 2016

I'm squarely on team cushion when it comes to base products. I spend much time evangelizing how amazing it is to be able to build up coverage to your particular need with the light, moisturizing layers afforded by many cc cushions. I'd reckon you could potentially put on 100 layers and still look mostly human (if you've seen those 100 layers of makeup videos you'll know what I'm talking about).

By now I assume everyone knows what a cushion product is, but just in case, I'll review - they are compacts that contain instead of powder or a foundation cake, a foundation soaked sponge. With the compact comes an antibacterial bouncy applicator puff that you dip into the sponge, and pat onto the face.

Today I'm pretty delighted to have a cushion review for you. This Tosowoong Essence Cushion was sent to me by Cupidrop.com in shade 21, Light Beige.

There are 3 shades in the range: 21 Light Beige which corresponds to an NC15, 22 Pink Beige which may be an N20, and 1 Pink Tone-up, which is like a shimmery highlighter cushion.

So let's get into the review!

The cushion comes with 15 grams of product and no refill (which is customary when it comes to higher end cushions). It states that the product contains 55% damask rose water-based essence, and is a daily 7 in 1 skin perfecting product that offers brightening, anti-aging, moisturizing, and UV protection. It's pretty cool you'll see, how they swirled the essence into the foundation. In addition to the damask rose water (which sounds nice but isn't necessarily that great for skin), there's human oligopeptide in the product, which should help for anti-aging, and 5 alpha-Avocuta which sounds like it could be a proprietary (?) ingredient that is hepful to control sebum.

Ingredients below:

Packaging-wise, the cushion is a very hardy white plastic case, with black lettering on it. It's not a looker, but it's sturdy nonetheless.

One thing that needs improvement however, is the mirror in the compact. It looks like one of those funhouse mirrors, so it's virtually useless. However, if you're more prone to touch up in a bathroom as opposed to out in public, it's not a dealbreaker. I've just been informed that there is a legitimate mirror for this cushion, it's just covered by a sticker.

The cushion comes sealed off. You can also see the applicator puff which looks and is very standard. It's on the less stiff side which somehow seems to be correlated with a more flawless finish, for me anyways. Stiffer applicators tend to make marks in the foundation as I found out with the TonyMoly BCDation cushion.

See the swirls! They don't stay that way. After a few weeks of using this cushion, the swirls have managed to ooze their way in towards one another leaving just a medley of various shades of beige.

How the product transfers onto the puff. The coverage isn't splotchy at all even at this stage. It smells like roses. :-)

Here's an arm swatch and below is how it looks on my face. The color is about an NC15, so warm and yellow-y, with a pretty dewy look. I'd call it a semi-matte semi-dewy cushion, it's right in the middle.

The cushion lasts for quite awhile during the day. I like the application - it's easy to get it looking flawless with one layer, and the coverage as you can see based on my undereye circles, is medium and can be built up. I also like how the shade isn't too bright and leans more natural.

It's also quite moisturizing and lasts a whole workday without too much fading (except around the nose and mouth area). I reach for this cushion often and prefer it to my Hera Ultra Moist and even TonyMoly BCDation these days.

Although this product is not a looker, it definitely is a solid cc cushion. The only issue with the cushion is the mirror, and the fact that at this price point, I have to compare it with the IOPE's and Hera's of the world (they're more expensive but provide free refills) - good thing the actual quality of the product inside does manage to measure up to the more premium brands. :-)

I recommend this one if you wouldn't be bothered by the mirror, want dewy medium coverage, and can find a shade match.

Thank you to Cupidrop for the chance to review the cushion.
