Three Korean Sunscreens Reviewed: Apieu, Earth's Recipe, Goodal

Saturday, July 30, 2016

To be honest, I myself prefer Japanese sunscreens over Korean ones, because of the fact that they have a more granular designation for each sunscreen's stated UVA protection. Japanese sunscreens can be labeled anywhere from PA+ to PA++++ (4 +'s) protection, while Korean sunscreens can only be labeled ranging from one to three +'s.

In case you missed it, there is a new regulation that passed the Korean FDA in 2016 that allows Korean cosmetics companies to label sunscreens up to PA++++ (4 +'s), but those sunscreens haven't hit the market yet, and so consumers are still clueless as to whether that 2015 SPF 50+ PA+++ is actually PA+++ or PA++++. (Rumor had it that some Korean sunscreens offered the higher level of ++++ protection, but were not able to label and market the products as such).

So why am I using and reviewing Korean sunscreens when I don't even prefer them?

Sunscreens from the Land of the Rising Sun are hard as hell to source in a timely manner, without the help of Amazon Prime. Whereas there are a handful of U.S.-based retailers that sell Korean sunscreens which they can get to you in all of 3 days (hallelujah), I haven't found a Japanese retailer that does the same.

In case you find yourself in the same predicament, or you actually like Korean sunscreens for some reason or another (they do oftentimes cost less than their Japanese counterparts due to shipping, product size, among other things), do read on as I have 3 Korean sunscreen reviews for you.

If you're strictly about that PA++++ and cosmetically elegant sunscreen life, read my review of multiple Japanese sunscreens here.

If you don't recall how I like to review sunscreens, here's a reminder of the grading scale I use for them. I care about...

Ingredients
Type of UV Filter
Whether it offers full spectrum protection from UVA1, UVA2, and UVB rays
How high the protection factor is
Whether the UV filters present are stable
Suitability for skin types, seasons, and environment
Whether there are acne triggers
Whether it leaves a white cast
Scent
Size
Cost
Accessibility/Where to buy it

And away we go!

Apieu Pure Block Natural Sun Cream Daily SPF 45 PA+++

Why you would buy this one You have dry skin that needs a cream-type sunscreen, even in summer and want one without a white cast, that applies evenly. You either wear makeup, or don't mind some shine. You like citrus scents. You want to try one of the most popular and bestselling Korean roadshop (drugstore) sunscreens of 2016.

A brightly citrus scented cream sunscreen; fairly nutritious formula

No white cast, even application, medium shine

Full Ingredients at CosDNA here
Type of UV Filter Chemical, which absorbs UV rays as opposed to physical ones that block or deflect UV rays.
Full spectrum protection? Yes. The filters are Ethylhexyl Methoxicinnamate (against UVB rays which are 290 - 320 nm in wavelength), Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid (UVB), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane aka Avobenzone (against UVA1 rays which are 340-400 nm in length), and Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine aka Tinosorb S (against UVB, UVA1, and UVA2 rays which are 320-340 nm in length).
Protection Factor Against UVB rays, this sunscreen is rated SPF 45, which is fairly high. (At least 1/4 tsp of sunscreen must still be applied at a time, and it must be reapplied every 2-3 hours to get stated level of protection). Against UVA rays, this sunscreen is rated PA+++ out of a possible four + range, which is fairly high.
Stable Filters? Yes.
Suitability I recommend this sunscreen for those with dry skin that often dries further when wearing sunscreen and/or makeup throughout the day. This sunscreen would be ideal for fall and winter time, and in any dry environments like places with strong heating and air conditioning.
Acne Triggers This product contains Cetearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, PEG-100 Stearate which are all low acne triggers.
White Cast/Finish? No white cast. Medium shine finish.
Repurchase? Yes, for dry skinned me.
Scent Citrus, strong.
Size 50ml
Cost $ out of $$$$
Accessibility/Where to buy it Amazon has it for $8.77* or iBuyBeauti has it for $6.79 with slower shipping; lastly bringbringshop on eBay carries it for $5.94 with slow shipping

Earth's Recipe Waterful Sun Gel SPF 50+ PA+++

Why you would buy this one
You have normal skin (it's still a bit plush for oily skin) that can handle a gel formula sunscreen without flaking. You like citrus scents, and don't mind a shiny finish because you wear makeup, or love doing the dew.

An off-white thick gel sunscreen with a light citrus scent

No white cast, but applies a bit patchy, dries out already dry skin, and leaves a medium shine
Full Ingredients at CosDNA here
Type of UV Filter Chemical.
Full spectrum protection? Yes. The filters are Ethylhexyl Methoxicinnamate (UVB), Octocrylene (UVB), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane aka Avobenzone (UVA1), and Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine aka Tinosorb S (UVB, UVA1, UVA2).
Protection Factor Against UVB rays, this sunscreen is rated SPF 50, which is high. (At least 1/4 tsp of sunscreen must still be applied at a time, and it must be reapplied every 2-3 hours to get stated level of protection). Against UVA rays, this sunscreen is rated PA+++ out of a possible four + range, which is fairly high.
Stable Filters? Yes. The notoriously unstable Avobenzone is stabilized with Octocrylene.
Suitability I recommend this sunscreen for those with normal skin as it can be quite drying. It's a little heavy for oily skin, and is not suitable for dry skin. This sunscreen would be ideal for summer for those with normal skin. If someone with oily skin lives in a dryer environment, I could see this working for them as well.
Acne Triggers This product contains Sorbitan Oleate which is a moderate risk for acne, and Dimethicone which is a low-level trigger.
White Cast/Finish? No white cast, the finish has medium shine which can be a bit uneven.
Repurchase? No. It's too drying for me and doesn't contain enough good-for-you ingredients to warrant its high price.
Scent Citrus, cosmetic, light.
Size 50ml
Cost $$$ out of $$$$
Accessibility/Where to buy it Based in the U.S., Glow Recipe carries it for $25, if it's your first time purchasing with them use this link to get $5 off* | Amazon has it too for the same price here

Goodal Mild Protect Essence Sun SPF 50+ PA+++

Why you would buy this one You have oily, normal, or dry skin and want the lightest sunscreen available. You don't mind strong citrus scents, and don't mind medium shine, and an uneven dry down because you're covering with makeup or you're just not that particular.

This is the most unique sunscreen formula I've come across - it's a pale orangeish hydrating essence formula, pretty strong citrus scent though. This also has a fair amount of skin conditioning ingredients, but should because price

It dries a bit splotchy but the white cast is almost non-existent, and the finish is a medium shine

Full Ingredients at CosDNA here
Type of UV Filter Chemical.
Full spectrum protection? No. The filters are Ethylhexyl Methoxicinnamate (UVB), Homosalate (UVB), and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate aka Uvinul A (UVA1). This one is kind of odd as it doesn't protect against UVA2 rays. Usually it's the UVA1 ray protection that gets excluded. Either way it's unideal.
Yes.
Suitability I recommend this sunscreen for anyone with skin. This works with my dry skin without drying it out while remaining lightweight and easy to wear. It's extremely light, so those with normal and oily skin may enjoy it even more. This is a great summer sunscreen.
Acne Triggers It contains some low-level triggers like Dimethicone, Tocopherol, Oleth-10, Simethicone.
White Cast/Finish? No white cast, the finish has medium shine, but can look splotchy at times.
Repurchase? No as it's quite expensive for the fact that it doesn't offer full spectrum protection and for the size of the bottle being so small.
Scent Citrus, strong.
Size 50ml
Cost $$$ out of $$$$
Accessibility/Where to buy it Based in the U.S., Glow Recipe carries it for $25, if it's your first time purchasing with them use this link to get $5 off* | Club Clio USA has it too for the same price here | It's $35.70 with 'free shipping' on Amazon

That's all for today. I wonder why each of these sunscreens had a citrus scent. I haven't really encountered sunscreens with scents other than the 'I'm wearing sunscreen' scent before.
In any case, enjoy your Saturday! And wear sunscreen...

Do you use sunscreen often? Daily?
Which have you been using and enjoying of late?
