GET IT BEAUTY 2015 11/11//2015 'Bathroom Upgrade Project' Show Notes

Monday, November 16, 2015

Hi guys - I hope you've been well. I'm happy to be back from a short break, and to be able to bring you the latest 'Get It Beauty' show notes.

If you're joining me for the first time, Get It Beauty is a popular Korean beauty show that brings experts and celebrities before a studio audience to discuss beauty tips and secrets. They used to subtitle their shows in English, but stopped around late spring/early summer. I started translating episodes a few months back, in case any one was interested in the content.

Part I: Bathroom Beauty Must-Haves

This episode starts off with some basic bathroom care tips. Korean bathroom care is actually waaaay different than the rest of the world, because Korean bathrooms are designed to flood. You can check one out in the clip below...

Because of this the space remains quite damp at almost all times, and they need to take special measures to keep it sanitary. Get It Beauty recommended these following tips which may or may not apply to you... Most likely they will not, since I'm assuming you're not reading this from Korea.

1. Clean the ceilings. Bacteria can grow on even ceilings and can cluster and drop onto the floor.

2. Make sure towels dry all the way as damp towels can harbor mold and bacteria. This is especially not good for those with dermatitis or other skin conditions.

3. Flush with the toilet seat cover down because of... obvious reasons.

And lastly, there was a passing PSA on making sure to either not store cosmetics without parabens in the bathroom, or to make sure to get rid of them before they expire.

With that little bit of grossness out of the way... Let's move onto the audience's Bathroom Beauty Must-Haves (starts at 13:00).

Before the show, the audience members, who'd each brought their favorite bathroom beauty product with them, stashed their items either by the sink, the bathtub, or the shower. Our hosts for today, the lovely actress Lee Hanui (the one in the Pretty Woman 80's get-up and beret), Kim Jung Min (long dark hair), and Sistar's Bora (long light hair) begin selecting some products to discuss with the audience.

(14:08) Bora runs over to the sink to choose some products. She's immediately drawn to a lavender scented bottle and asks the audience whose it is. She's curious to ask the audience member why this bottle of lavender-scented bath salts are placed next to the sink, instead of the bathtub.

The audience member explains... She's used it for a year and it is something she uses in the tub for taking baths as well, but she's taken to using it as a face scrub too.

The male host (I keep forgetting his name) clarifies by saying it's probably a multi-use item that's supposed to be used on the body AND the face. Hopefully, they're thinking, for safety reasons.

Jung Min jokes around about how if you use a face product on your body, it feels like you're leveling up, but when using a body product on your face, it feels like a downgrade. The male host talks about how it's probably okay as the product is also meant for the face. It's probably not that harsh and he seems to think that there are products in other countries like scrubby face cleansers that are also meant to be used as toothpaste (o.O say wut. Is this true? Anyone?)

Bora tests the product out on her hand, adding just a little bit of lukewarm water to it. She says it's very delicate and more finely milled than sugar. It also melts when put in contact with water. She thinks it could work on the face. The other hosts agree that it is soft and gentle and the lavender scent could be therapeutic. Jung Min rags on Bora for not bringing over at least 2 items and heads over to select another product herself. ^^ (She's the sassy one.)

This product is by a brand that starts with the letter B and costs about 10000 KRW, or $10.  I tried finding it, but couldn't figure it out. If you know, please let me know in the comments below!

So Jung Min goes over to pick the next item. Trying every thing in her path (she's such k-beauty butt buddy material).  She casually passes over a bubble cleansing pack, and settles on a mud mask. The audience member who brought it speaks up. She says she picked it up in New York on a trip. (Jung Min says she always has the most expensive taste). The audience member had been shopping in New York and was stopping by to pick up a really well-known facial scrub from the brand, but the sales attendant told her that if she used this mask, it would bring dead skin back to life. Everyone starts cracking up at this. But she ended up buying two after she tried it. She likes how it makes her skin feel as soft as butter and makes sure to use it once a week.

Jung Min says she likes mud packs too, but finds then really annoying and inconvenient to wash off. The audience member goes on, talking about how it's a little strong, so when her skin is feeling sensitive, she uses just a little bit. But when her skin is feeling up to the task, she uses a ton of the pack, and the next day her skin DOES look more alive. The male host says oftentimes the minerals in these types of masks are great for the skin but can make it sting for some people. Jung Min has her hands all over the things. She tries the mask and says that it doesn't dry crispy, it retains a little bit of moisture all the way through, so it's not very abrasive. Jung Min heads over to the bath tub to wash it off and says that the skin on her hand feels moist and she thinks it could work for sensitive skin types.

I am 99.9% sure this is the Seacret Dead Sea Mud Mask, linked here.

They want to look at some of the shower items. Lee Hanui takes a trip over to the shower to pick something up next. There's a million things. She picks up a shower head someone unscrewed from their home and brought with them. She's interested by it because it could be a fancy one that infuses the water with minerals or something. But she ends up picking a plastic bottle holder that she thinks could be useful. The audience member speaks up and says that her brother picked it up from a bazaar or fair one day and she ended up buying a similar one. She uses it to get the last bits of shampoo or conditioner out as it turns the bottle on its head and onto an angle that makes the stuff inside dispense easily. The hosts want to know how they would find it online. "Idea Saving Cap. is what you'd search for, but I've linked it here for you. ;)

Now Jung Min heads over to see the must-haves around the bath tub. There's only 2 items (which totally isn't surprising because not many Koreans own bath tubs.. you're very fortunate or well-endowed to own a bath tub). She picks up the above bottle and says it looks like sake from Japan. The audience member verifies that it's a rice wine bath bubble product. The hosts smell it and think it smells slightly like liquor. The audience member explains why she brought it. Rice wine has the ability to detoxify the body, she says. She uses it once a week. She also has two other bath items in front of her, so the hosts invite her to the stage to show them how to use the products.

1. Rice wine bubble bath
The male host talks about how rice wine has the ability to remove waste and improve circulation. She takes 2-3 drops and places them in the warm water bath. The smell is really nice apparently, and the male host talks about how it's easier to get more bubbles if you drop the product into the running water. Apparently Jung Min's tried this but emptied the entire bottle in 3 uses.

The product is from a brand that starts with the letter S and costs 140000 KRW, or $140.

2. The second product is a Japanese onsen (hot spring) carbonated bath bomb.
She sticks it in warm water and the gas collected from the onsen gets released. It starts fizzing and turning the water yellow. The scent is strong and floral, not citrus like the color would suggest.

The product is from a brand that starts with the letter B, and costs 1000 KRW, or $1.

3. The third product is easy to recognize. It's a Lush bath bomb with rose petals. It turns the bath water purple and smells floral. Bora, whose name actually means purple in Korean, is all over this one. Here's the link to this product. Before letting the audience member return to her seat, the hosts all start touching her to feel how soft her skin is...

Part II: Lee Hanui, Kim Jung Min, and Sistar's Bora's Favorite Beauty Products for the Bathroom

WHAT ABOUT THE HOSTS? What are their favorite products?

JUNGMIN (Left-most)

She wants to recommend everything she owns including a scalp essence (anti-hair loss hair care is a growing category in Korea's beauty industry), a morning cleanser, and an all-in-one cleanser. She's way too excited so they force her to just pick her top two items.

The first is her wash off mask. It's a powder that turns into a green paste when water is added to it. Lee Hanui wants to know if it contains algae. Jung Min says the ingredients are in English so she doesn't know. LOL.

She shows how to use it and what the consistency should be. She mixes and applies it with a foundation brush. Fancy.

Lee Hanui is the true expert and she's going gaga over the ingredients list which includes vitamins A-K, enzymes, proteins, a mineral complex, algae, chlorella, and spirulina too. She goes nuts when she finds out there's a vegetable complex including things like tomato, cabbage, carrot, the list goes on.

It's a pretty watery pack but it takes about like 10 minutes to dry. Jung Min and Hanui are both in love with it for different reasons. Jung Min loves how it makes her skin look amazingly clean and fresh, and Hanui loves the ingredients list. In addition, because it's in powder form, Jung Min feels like it'll last longer.

I'm also 99.99% sure that it is this product here, the Dr. Alkaitis Organic Universal Mask.

Jung Min's second pick is an exfoliator. She likes this one because unlike most exfoliators that are used right after cleansing, this one is different. She says the directions tell her to use it like a sleeping pack. Lee Hanui thinks this is doubtful. But Jung Min goes on that she uses this product 1-2 times a week and likes it because instead of peeling, it feels like 'scaling'.

This product is by a brand that starts with the letter Y and costs about 80000 KRW, or $80.

LEE HANUI (the host in the middle)

Hanui says she likes to kick it and relax with her hair pulled back when she enters her bathroom. She'll do a hair mask or something, and while she waits, she uses a sheet mask for just a few minutes. She has this interesting pack of 50 sheet masks. It looks like a pack of cleansing wipes.

Jung Min finds Hanui's electric scalp massager and tries to steal it. Hanui also shows a scalp ampoule for hair loss prevention and is finally asked to hurry it up and show her top two recommendations.

Her first pick is a hair loss prevention scalp essence by a brand that starts with the letter A, and costs around 50000 KRW, or $50. There's also a scalp mist for 30000 KRW, or $30, and a scalp massager by a brand that starts with the letter I, for 90000 KRW, or $90. (I think I forgot to mention that the program never shows the brand name, but just the first letter.)

Her second pick is her gaggle of toothbrushes and related items. She owns 5 different kinds of toothbrushes, a UV light sanitizer, and a tongue scraper. It makes her feel healthier and almost detoxified when she cleans her teeth and tongue thoroughly. One of the brushes is very small to reach the corners of the mouth, another has jagged edges to 'exfoliate', there's an electric brush, and another is really large to kind of toughen her gums up. People seem shocked so Hanui just says, you know what? She doesn't care because she can kiss anyone and nothing bad will happen.

BORA (right-most)

Bora's not a real beauty junkie. She doesn't use a lot of skincare, and likes body products the most. Her top three picks she brought along with her today are a body oil that smells like Chanel no. 5, a body wash and lotion that smell like lemon. She prefers fresh scents over florals. Her tip is to layer body wash and lotion with the same scent to make it last longer. There's also a shampoo by a brand famous for its rosewater (I was very curious but couldn't figure this one out) It's got a perfume scent and it makes her happy to smell this shampoo all day.

MINYOUNG (male host) one ups EVERYONE.

His must-have is an automatic hydrogel mask maker.

Get It Beauty 2015 11/11/2015 Bathroom Upgrade Project episode show notes, English subtitles translation, transcription. Lee Hanui, Kim Jungmin, and Sistar Bora's favorite beauty products. Taiwanese hydrogel mask machine maker.

It's the Taiwanese hydrogel mask maker that we've been seeing all over the beauty media! He likes to make masks with kiwis, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other things that have vitamins in them. He'll use algae, oil, wine, and other substances too. For today he chooses to make a tomato mask.

1. He takes a small hand size tomato and plops it into the intake tube.

2. He then opens up a compartment with two holes. One is for water, and the other is for a collagen essence tablet. (It looks like dishwasher tablet but contains skincare ingredients).

3. He presses the button which makes the machine get to work. It starts shaking. He says it takes roughly 10 minutes and it's done when you see steam.

In the meantime, he shows his other must-have. It's a glove made out of a quick-dry towel material. He massages his head with it to dry his hair quickly in the mornings. He likes it for scalp massage too.

After he's done explaining, there's an awkward silence, as they wait for the mask to finish gelling.

He breaks the silence... "At home you can do other things, you don't have to sit and stare at the machine." ^^

To the chorus of "Hallelujah" the mask maker is finished. The gel mask is ejected onto a tray. It's warm at first, and cools off within 5 minutes. He says not to put it in the fridge as the mask can retain smells (like kimchi) and the mask could lose moisture.

The mask is super thick and smells like tomato. It actually fits Jung Min, the one with the longest face. It slides a lot, but it's very moist and feels refreshingly cool.

The episode ends there.
