Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion Trial + My Ideal Toner

Saturday, June 25, 2016

I'm not so sure the internet needs another full-blown Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion review, but I think I might microblog my experience with it. Ooh "microblog", I feel all Techcrunch-y calling it that.

But seriously, there are many full reviews of this essence/toner. Here's a link to an excellent one done by Holy Snails, and here is a link to a thread on reddit where many people discuss their experience with it. I'd just like to add one more data point for you in case you're considering this one.

I picked it up at my local Japanese grocer because:

a) It has a short and sweet ingredients list that is targeted at preventing tans, fading any leftover spots from active acne, and it still has a ton of hyaluronic acid (2 forms, and one cousin), the power hydrator, so I knew it would be pretty ideal for dehydrated skin.

INGREDIENTS Water (Solvent), Butylene Glycol (Solvent), Glycerin (Humectant), Arbutin (Brightener), Disodium Succinate (Surfactant), Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid (Humectant), Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Antioxidant, Brightener), Methyl paraben (Preservative), PPG-10 Methyl Glucose Ether (Emollient), Sodium Hyaluronate (Humectant), Sorbitol (Viscosity Control, Moisturizer), Styrene/VP Copolymer (Film-Forming, Opacifier), Succinic Acid (Astringent)

b) It's super cost-effective at about $15 to $20 and is available at both drugstore.com* and on Amazon Prime*.

c) If my run with the Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion is any indicator, this 170 ml bottle of essence/toner will last me almost a year. Sweet. And I'll just have it around, just in case I 'catch' a tan throughout the year or need to prevent or treat any PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, usually after a bout with acne).

So, I've used it for 4-ish weeks, and I think it's working slightly. In some areas of my face? Inside the bubble in the picture above, the lighter spots are getting lighter. My moles are a lost cause, but I'm happy to see some sun spots fading away. I'm not sure how much of an effect I'm seeing, but I'm about to swap out the Shirojyun Lotion with my Paula's Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster to see if one is more effective than the other.

10% Niacinamide.

My hands have been itching to rip this box open ever since I got it.

Anyways, lastly about the Shirojyun Lotion, one thing that might keep you from wanting to pick it up is that it's way less moisturizing than the Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion. It's a cloudy water texture instead of a plush sheet mask essence type feel, despite having the standard trio of water, butylene glycol, and glycerin as solvents. Just one thing to keep in mind. It bothered me a bit since I have dry skin.

Going through this exercise of sharing how the Shirojyun worked for me, made me formulate my thoughts around what an ideal summer essence/toner (to me) would contain and it would have:

a) Acne fighters - Tea Tree, Centella Asiatica, Azelaic Acid
b) Humectants - Hyaluronic Acid
c) Brighteners - alpha-Arbutin, Licorice Root, Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, etc.

Looking through CosDNA's repository of products, I think that I might go for the Naruko Tea Tree Shine Control and Blemish Clear Toner next, after the Paula's Choice product, around the August time frame.

See the shiny ingredients list here.

That's all for today. Please let me know what you think of the shorter more stream-of-consciousness review format! I might start doing more of these if you like them! Thanks!

What's your ideal summer toner?
