As excited as I get over discovering new Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese beauty brands, I know that there are way too many out there for me to try them all. That's why I am so pleased when a brand reaches out to me, making my decision-to-review process a bit simpler, granted I and the brand would have to see eye to eye on whether it would make sense for us to collaborate at all - based on many factors like whether they have any products that I and my readership might be interested in, similarity in how we might value the products in terms of price, etc. It's a rare occasion when the stars align in this way and I am able to bring to you a sponsored product review that I think will be extremely interesting to those of you with a similar skin type or taste as me. Anyway, with that, let's get into today's review.
Young-Ji, the brand owner of new Korean beauty brand PurpleTale reached out to me a few weeks, almost a month ago to see if I would be interested in trying any of their products.
PurpleTale is based in South Korea, and ships internationally within 5-15 days using UPS or FedEx for $18 to the U.S. Any customs/duties are the responsibility of the buyer. I find their website to be super simple and intuitive to use, and the most important part is that you have the option to make your transaction secure using PayPal.

As they are quite new, they currently have only a handful of products on offer, a 5-in-1 masking product, an essence, facial cream, neck cream, restorative cream, and bb cream. Not to leave men out, PurpleTale also have 2 men's products in their line, an all-in-one cream, and a bb cream.
ODE TO HYDRATION FACIAL CREAM
Our love for happy and healthy skin has us feeling so poetic that we were inspired to compose an ode… to hydration! Formulated with carefully chosen ingredients such as ginseng, peptide complexes, adenosine, and niacinamide, our Ode to Hydration will repair a wide variety of skin concerns including dull complexion, fine lines, dark spots, and blemishes. Basically, it's like serenading your skin with its very own love song. Not only that, it's perfect for all skin types, and that's fact, not fiction.
If you order one of these, it will come in a large purple cylindrical cardboard box as pictured above. The design is very simple and clean with the logo and name of the product are written in white. There is also a note saying it is Made in Korea.
The directions for use and a list of active ingredients are listed on the bottom of the box in English.

To Use: Gently apply all over cleansed and toned face and neck. Lightly tap to aid absorption.
When you open up the box, you'll see a clear purple glass container (50ml/1.7oz) with the same brand and product name emblazoned across the front. The top of the container is a purple metalized twist-off cap that shuts completely and seems airtight. There is also an white plastic inner lid to add to the airtightness. Nestled in a little caddy on the bottom of the cardboard box is a clear plastic spatula to enable one to use the cream more hygienically. I found the packaging quite thoughtful, though it is just a tad bulkier than my taste.
INGREDIENTS Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Stearic Acid, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Polysorbate 60, Dimethicone, Sorbitan Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Isohexadecane, Polysorbate 80, Betaine, Polyglutamic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Alcohol Denat., Pueraria Mirifica Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Copper Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Ginsenosides, Ethylhexylglycerin, Adenosine, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, [COSDNA]
The ingredients above are expressed in the texture of the cream. The extra emollient coconut-derived caprylic/capric triglyceride, shea nut butter, and macadamia seed oil are responsible for the richness and butteriness of this cream. I compare this to ordering a trenta peanut butter mocha butter beer Frappuccino at Starbucks. It is rich and quite thick.
In terms of active ingredients, there is the ever welcome presence of niacinamide (vitamin B3), an excellent anti-ager that speeds up collagen turnover in the skin to provide excellent care for wrinkles and to rid skin of hyperpigmentation. There are the ever so hydrating betaine, polyglutamic acid, and sodium hyaluronate, which work to draw water back into the outermost layers of the skin. There is the acne-fighting antibacterial centella asiatica extract, and various forms of peptides, and adenosine which are supposedly potent anti-agers.
Last but not least are pure ginsenosides, not to be confused with ginseng extract. While I am no cosmetic chemist, it does hearten me to see the name of the actual antioxidant in the ingredients list as it leads me to believe that the product contains more of the active compound responsible for skin repair and just all-around goodness.
Those with silicone, stearic acid, fatty alcohol, and oil sensitivities will want to avoid this product.
PERFORMANCE
In terms of how this performed on my dry, aging, 31 year old skin, it was absolutely amazing. While the cream is super rich, it is not hard to spread onto the skin and applies like a dream. There is a slight floral fragrance that dissipates as the product dries down. This gives me not velvety smooth skin, but skin that is akin to SATIN aka it gives smoothness with some slip and glow. While I could see this cream being a bit too much for those with oily skin, it really handled my dry 3-washes-a-day + 1 tretinoin application-a-day skin very well without feeling suffocating at all. It plumps my skin while absorbing overnight and I wake up with refreshed, brightened, skin. I have not been able to test the anti-acne properties/claims on this cream at all but will update this review should the occasion arise. In any case, at $29.99 (newly reduced!) for 50ml, this is not something that one would just throw into a shopping cart without a second thought, but I would say that if you are looking for a cream within the Kbeauty/Asianbeauty sphere to replace a rich night cream like say your Oil of Olay, Cerave, Cetaphil and would like to make an investment in providing your skin lots of antioxidants and anti-aging peptides, I would recommend this one to you. This cream is most definitely an Ode to Hydration that I'd like to nickname the Ode to Beautiful Bouncy Skin.
