Hello everyone - I just wanted to post a few (uncharacteristically) short and sweet reviews on some products that I was sent by Memebox as a part of their brand ambassador program. There are affiliate links in this post.
This probably isn't the first review you've read on this cleanser as Memebox launched it to some fanfare a month? Maybe 2 months ago? Time flies..
But it will be the shortest as it failed to crack my wish list.
So really quickly - if you're joining me here for the first time, a cleansing balm is 'first cleanser', which pretty much means it's a makeup remover. Cleansing balms are usually oil-based, and work quickly and effectively to remove makeup, which is also mostly oil-based. They work because like dissolves like.
Memebox claims this particular cleansing balm is a 3-part cleansing balm, oil, and milk product which is to me, very clever marketing as most cleansing balms I have used also have been 3-phase. The balm also incorporates Jeju Island (the Hawaii of South Korea)'s spring water (-_- reserving judgment).
Most interesting to me is that the balm contains nourishing and moisturizing ingredients like shea butter and lotus flower extract. It also contains citrus peel extract, but this I'm hesitant to say whether it is beneficial to the skin. Homework for next time. :)
To use this product:
1. Take a quarter-size dollop of balm and rub it between your fingers to warm it up.
2. Apply it onto your (dry) face and use gentle circular motions to loosen and break up the makeup, paying extra care to and using less pressure on your eye area.
3. Once you're satisfied the makeup has un-imprinted itself from your face, add water to 'emulsify' the product and wash it off completely. Adding water will turn the oil into a milky consistency, making it easier to identify when you've gotten it off your face completely.
4. Especially if you're prone to break outs, make sure to follow up with a second water-based cleanser - this could be something that foams, or a cleansing water which I'm a fan of in the winter.
5. Tone your face (optional) and move on with the rest of your droolworthy skincare routine!
INGREDIENTS Mineral Oil, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Polyethylene, PEG-8 Isostearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Water, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Butylene Glycol, Nelumbo Nucifera Flower Extract, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Citric Acid, Oxygen [ANALYSIS]
The ingredients list is very typical of a cleansing balm. This one is mineral oil-based like the Banila Co Clean It Zero and the Shara Shara Berry Cleansing Sherbert. So if you haven't had any issues with either of those products, and are curious about this one, it is very likely it could work out for you, barring any sensitivities to shea butter.
The mineral oil and cetyl ethylhexanoate work to melt the makeup off your face while the PEG-20 glyceryl triisostearate and the PEG-8 isostearate are the ingredients behind the emulsification. The polyethylene (plastic) is partly responsible for the firm balm-like texture of the product, and the rest of the product is made up of moisturizing and skin-conditioning ingredients.
It is parabens-free, but still contains fragrance.
The packaging of this product is pretty solid however. It comes in a clear plastic container with an adorable pink screw-on cap. There are snowflakes and pink text on the container. It almost looks like glass.
Performance-wise, this product excels at taking off even the most stubborn waterproof eyeliner and mascara. I give it high marks on removing makeup. I am also happy to report that it did not dry my face out. Where it fails to impress me is the cleansing milk/emulsification stage, when I try to remove the traces of the product. I find that it's not that easy to wash off. I could have expected this as I've found that many of the cleansing balms I have tried have been harder to remove than the cleansing oils that I love and stand by (My wishlist has like 937 cleansing oils and only maybe 5 cleansing balms). This may not be as important to you as the ability to remove makeup, however, for me as someone with dry, aging skin, it's preferable to use products that don't require too much manual manipulation to get off my face.
So overall, I don't think it's a bad product. It does remove makeup well, and is very affordable. I'm not a fan of the tougher removal process and the fact that the scent doesn't make me want to eat it.
