Nooni Root Therapy Cleansing Water Review, Gettin' Fizzy With It

Saturday, May 21, 2016

I received the Nooni Root Therapy Cleansing Water from Memebox through its brand ambassador program and will be reviewing it for you today. But long story short, I had a very YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary, or less than stellar) experience with this product, so I will be brief with this review.

Nooni is Memebox's own in-house skincare brand that launched towards the end of 2015. They first came out with an oil-based cleansing balm and now have added this cleansing water, a toner, a cream, and various other types of skincare to their lineup.

This particular cleansing water is fortified with the essence of various plant roots and carbonated water sourced from CheongJu, South Korea, and it is meant to remove makeup as a first cleanser. It can also be used to remove oil cleanser residue, so as a second cleanser. The featured roots are lotus (high in antioxidants), fig (actually not that great of a skincare ingredient, it is a potential irritant), and beet root (another antioxidant). I'm uncertain of the benefits of carbonated water to the skin, but when you shake the bottle up, it's fun to see it fizz and bubble over.

The packaging of the nooni products is pretty well done, cheap and plastic but with a really nice design. I haven't had any gripes about their packaging yet. This toner comes in a clear plastic, very pliable bottle, with a silver twist-off cap. Inside, when you first open the product, there is a white plastic stopper that will ensure that the product inside is secure. I love their logo and designs, they're not only practical, but very simple, and classic without being a bore. There's 340 ml of product which is a TON and the product expiration date is printed on the bottom of both the bottle and the box.
INGREDIENTS Water, Alcohol Denatured, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Carbonated Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Nelumbo Nucifera Extract, Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract, Panthenol, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Allantoin, Sodium Chloride, Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Ethylhexylglycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Fragrance [CosDNA]

While there is alcohol in this product, the coconut-derived caprylic/capric glycerides seem to counteract it and makes the consistency of the product quite thick. It's a watery product, but a thick water as though it's been lifting weights. It's quite a hydrating product. It is fragranced, but not heavily, and it smells really nice and fruity like fig. Please do not use if you have a known sensitivity to any of the ingredients listed above.

The first few days I used this product, everything went swimmingly well. I was perfectly happy dispensing 5-10 drops of product onto my cotton pad, soaking it all the way through, and watching my makeup somehow magnetically migrate from my face to cotton round. Performance-wise, this product cleanses the face of makeup, even the waterproof stuff, dust, dirt, and sunscreen gently and thoroughly. Furthermore the pH of the product is a skin-friendly 5. So I view the product as a part cleansing water, part hydrating toner.

I went so far as to skip my customary oil cleanse in favor of this product 3-5 days in a row. That's when I started to notice that my skin started flaking and doing #justdryskinthings, and I knew I had to give the cleansing water routine a rest. I've checked all of my other products to make certain that they were not/are not the cause of any flaking, and am slowly reincorporating this cleansing water into my nighttime skincare routine. My poor first impression of the product may be redeemed just yet. I have a feeling that I might be sensitive to ficus carica (fig) fruit extract or the alcohol in the product, though it's difficult to just pin down one irritant as the culprit as the act of physically rubbing my face with a cotton round may have added to the crackly, crumbly desert-like conditions I experienced my 5th day using this product. I don't suggest using this product on a daily basis on dry skin. Those with oilier, or more balanced normal skin, may see different results than I experienced. If you are also iffy on any of the ingredients, I recommend purchasing one of their deluxe samples of this cleansing water before buying a full-size.

My final rating of this product is a 1 2 3 4 5. It's lovely to use when I'm too tired to do a full double cleansing and skincare routine, but I don't recommend relying on it on a daily basis.

Thank you Memebox, and if you want to check out this product for yourself, it's on sale for $13 right now at Memebox.com
