Salon Esthe Cel:Cushion Mask Review

Monday, May 9, 2016

Now that the weather is less Chicago winter tundra and more mild and temperate, I haven't been using sheet masks quite as often as I used to. I did manage to pick up a few that had piqued my curiosity while visiting my local Aritaum store to try out. Over the weekend I had a special occasion for which I used one of the haul's spoils to prep for. The mask I'm talking about is the Salon Esthe Cel:Cushion Mask in Nourishing Ceramide.

The Salon Esthe brand (meaning: Beauty Salon) is a relatively new purely skincare brand under the Amore Pacific/Aritaum umbrella of brands. I first started seeing their products around in early 2016 - they do a variety of sheet masks, including heated masks, and some wash-off packs as well.

The Cel:Cushion mask is their basic cotton sheet mask, and they have 5 varieties: Nourishing Ceramide, Lifting Collagen, Moisturizing Hyaluronic Acid, Brightening Galactomyces, and Soothing Calming Propolis.

Considering how dull my skin's been looking, I thought that I would pick up a few of the Nourishing Ceramide masks to strengthen the moisture barrier by giving it a boost of skin-soothing ceramides and various other good-for-you ingredients.

The mask comes in a silver plastic packet with the ingredients and instructions for use on a sticker pasted on the back.

The directions say to prepare the skin with a toner after washing the face, and to place the mask on the face for 10-20 minutes, patting the essence into the skin afterwards. I tend to use my sheet masks after cleansing, toning, actives, essence, and serum. Then I seal the sheet mask's effects in with a cream or sleeping pack that is quite emollient/occlusive to hopefully see the results extended for more than just that one night.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, PEG-32, BIS-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Octyldodecanol, Ceramide NP, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Extract, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Extract, Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Tromethamine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Adenosine, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance [CosDNA]

Before getting into a detailed review, for the sake of brevity and to give you an out in case you're not interested in the mask - the mask itself is totally lackluster and the experience is unimpressive, the results you can get from this mask are still quite nice though.

The mask material is cotton, but not a soft pima cotton like that of many other masks in the same or lower price range, this mask feels a bit like table cloth and it's not evenly saturated.  (For reference, the mask cost $3 at Aritaum, some of the aforementioned masks that are made of higher-quality mask material and still give great results are less than $2).

The mask fit is also strange, there is quite a large gap around the edges of the nose, and the eye and mouth holes are also quite large, this is potentially a mask for people with large eyes. I'm definitely not in that category. There are slits around the temples and the jawline.

The essence is the one bright spot of the mask, essentially, the silver lining lol. The ceramide complex in conjunction with the thick and plush coconut oil-derived caprylic/capric triglycerides and shea butter make for a soothing, viscous texture that moisturizes deeply and absorbs fully into the skin. Though the mask only lasts for about 20-30 minutes tops before drying out, the results are great. The skin is truly nourished, calmed, evened, and moisturized. In terms of whether or not I recommend this mask, I don't. There are other ceramide / milky and creamy essence-saturated masks on the market for much cheaper that perform better. But if you ever pass by an Aritaum and are in need of a pick-me-up, it's not a terrible impulse buy. These are also available at various online retailers.

If any of you were curious about the Salon Esthe masks, I hope this review was informative for you. Have you tried any of the Cel:Cushion masks or any Salon Esthe masks in general? What did you think?
